Why northern Pakistan works for families

1. Naran & Kaghan - the family default
The Kaghan valley is the first choice for most Pakistani families, and for good reason. Kalam and the Ushu forest are green and photogenic, and Malam Jabba has a chairlift and, in winter, gentle ski slopes. Swat suits families who want scenery without a two-day drive.
4. Hunza - for families with older children
The Hunza valley is spectacular, but it is a longer commitment - two days of driving each way on the Karakoram Highway. It rewards families with older kids and teenagers who can enjoy the forts, the lakes and the high passes without getting restless in the car. If you have a week or more and the children are past the fidgety stage, Hunza is unforgettable.
5. Neelum Valley - forested and gentle
Azad Kashmir's Neelum valley is the greenest option, hugging a river through pine forest with plenty of short, easy stops. It is a good middle ground: more remote-feeling than Naran but without the long Karakoram drive of Hunza.
