Ratti Gali is a glacial lake at around 3,700 metres in the mountains above Dowarian in the Neelum valley — deep blue, ringed by snow well into July, and fed by the melt off the surrounding peaks. It is one of the hardest-earned and most photographed lakes in Azad Kashmir, and reaching it is a full day out from the valley floor.
The jeep track from Dowarian
The route starts at Dowarian, between Keran and Sharda on the main Neelum road. From there a rough 4x4 track climbs roughly 19 km to a base camp area below the lake — about three hours of genuinely hard driving that only local jeeps and drivers should attempt. From base camp it is a walk of around thirty to forty-five minutes on rising ground to the lake itself, or a horse ride for anyone who would rather not.
The lake and the meadows
The last stretch opens onto alpine meadow that is full of wildflowers in July and August, with the lake sitting in a bowl below the ridgeline. Ice floats on the surface into early summer and the water stays extremely cold all season. There are usually a handful of tea and food stalls at base camp in season and nothing at all at the lake itself. Weather turns quickly at this altitude — bright morning to cold rain within an hour is normal, so carry a layer even on a clear day.
Camping at base camp
Many travellers camp at the base camp meadow rather than doing the whole thing as a day trip, which is the better plan: you get the lake early in the morning before the day's jeeps arrive, and you avoid doing the three-hour descent tired. Tented camps operate through the season with basic bedding and hot food. Nights are cold — near freezing even in August. Everything carried up has to come back down; the meadow has no waste collection.
When to go
The track is generally passable from late June to mid-September, with July and August the reliable months and the meadows at their best. Earlier than that the upper section is still under snow, and after mid-September the weather closes in. Because it sits inside the Neelum valley, the same permit and ID rules apply — CNIC for Pakistani nationals, a Muzaffarabad-issued permit for foreign nationals. We check the track condition with local drivers before committing a group.
Ratti Gali compared with Saif-ul-Malook
Both are jeep-and-walk alpine lakes, and travellers often ask which to prioritise. Saif-ul-Malook is far easier — forty-five minutes of jeep track from Naran versus three hours from Dowarian — and correspondingly much busier. Ratti Gali is higher, harder to reach, has meadows around it rather than a crowded shoreline, and rewards an overnight. If you have limited time in the north, Saif-ul-Malook fits into a day. If you are already in Neelum and can spare a night, Ratti Gali is the better lake.
